How to Use the Transverse Wave Pendulum

Follow these simple steps to successfully demonstrate wave patterns in your STEM lab or classroom:

Setup: Place the apparatus on a flat, vibration-free laboratory table. Ensure all pendulum strings hang straight down and are completely stationary.

Alignment: Use the included flat wooden or plastic release bar to gently push all the pendulum bobs back to a uniform angle (typically a 15° to 20° displacement).

Simultaneous Release: Quickly and smoothly pull the release bar away horizontally. This ensures all the pendulums begin their oscillations at the exact same fraction of a second.

Observation: Watch from the side and front angles. You will immediately observe a shifting transverse wave pattern. Over the next 60 seconds, note how the wave pattern fragments into independent, seemingly chaotic movements before beautifully re-aligning back into phase.
